Lot 10

For over a decade, Douglas Coupland has been digitally re-interpreting paintings by Lawren Harris, Tom Thomson, and other members of the Group of Seven, exploring the ways in which Canadian culture and identity are built around their infamous depictions of the landscape. In Harris Holofoil Mountain Sketch, Coupland sources digital images of Harris’ Mountain Sketch XLI and using Photoshop, simplifies the mountain scene into flat planes of colour. Printed using a holofoil that diffracts the light and shows the colours of the spectrum at different angles, he lends the “vast, barren and natural” landscape a contemporary, technological lens.
