Lot 21

This drawing, Untitled (Year Book), is from a series of works Stephen Andrews created between 1993 and 1995. Those years in Toronto saw the loss of many in his generation to HIV/AIDS. The series had over a hundred drawings in total. 44 of them are in the collection of the Art Gallery of Ontario under the title Album. They are meditation on loss and memory. Drawings of snapshots, yearbook photos and calendar pages float by like a scrapbook of a life lived. They correspond to Andrews turning 40, so they also represent a reckoning with one’s self. They were made at a time when the personal was political and the stakes were very high.
