Ocean’s Lines is from Ari Bayuaji’s Weaving The Ocean series, which began with the notion of replacing vanishing natural materials with found new “natural” materials. Plastic is now so abundant in our environment that it has essentially become a major element of the natural world. Our lives are entangled with plastic products, much like the plastic ropes tangled in mangrove tree roots. In collaboration with the community in Sanur, Bali, Bayuaji began the elaborate process of unraveling and cleaning the plastic ropes he had harvested. The result is fine plastic threads of many colours that are then woven with cotton threads to create incredible works of art.
