Ben Walmsley’s Polychrome VI is one of a series of paintings in which he analyzed and emulated some of Tom Thomson’s beloved small oil sketches. He was particularly interested in the sculptural quality of Thomson’s impasto surfaces, and his idiosyncratic colour sense. This painting combines his version of Thomson’s The Sumacs from 1916, with a colour chart based on my palette in replicating the painting.
