Artist Statement
This hand painted ceramic plate depicts Elton John and his husband David Furnish at a costume ball, and commemorates Elton’s love of sartorial extravagance. The title of the work references the chorus of Levon (1971), one of Elton John’s signature songs. The couple’s eldest son Zachary’s middle name is also Levon, and, like another refrain from the song, he too was born “on a Christmas day.” So, in a way, the lyrics seem to anticipate the birthday of their first child. This artwork was included in Tod’s exhibition Invited Invasion at the Gardiner Museum in 2012.
