Gary Evans was born in Weston-super-Mare, England, and now resides in Alliston, Ontario. An established Canadian painter, Evans challenges conventional perceptions of the landscape, using abstraction as a means of exploring the act of seeing and our experience of place. As the artist explains, “abstraction for me has always been extrapolated from the real. In using it that way I hope to talk about the phenomena of perception that we all experience.”

Characterized by luminous colour, fragmented forms, and shifting perspectives, Evans’ paintings move between representation and abstraction, inviting viewers to reconsider familiar environments through a more intuitive and sensory lens. His work reflects an ongoing investigation into how memory, observation, and perception shape our understanding of the world around us.

Evans has been the subject of several survey exhibitions, including a 25-year collection-based retrospective at Paul Petro Contemporary Art in 2020, and will present a solo exhibition of new work in November. A graduate of the Ontario College of Art (1989), he has exhibited with Paul Petro Contemporary Art since 1995.
