Blue Devils are archetypal masquerade characters that emerged from the imaginations of emancipated Africans in Trinidad at the birth of Carnival. Blue devils are known to scream, dance both frenziedly and erotically and become a cathartic release of the pain and trauma of slavery, colonialism, and racism. Blue Devils crop up regularly in Natalie Wood’s artwork as a reminder of the creative imaginings and freedom seeking energy that is in her DNA.
The Blue Devil transplanted to Canada, walks with the energy of the Black Panther, and possesses the hockey stick in preparation for 2022.
