Artist Statement
Toronto-based artist Edward Burtynsky is regarded as one of the world’s most accomplished contemporary photographers and one of Canada’s most celebrated artists. For decades now, Burtynsky’s breathtaking large-format photographs have circled the globe, offering viewers transformative encounters with the intensive environmental consequences of human industrial activity. Through Burtynsky’s lens we have come to grasp the sheer scale of our permanent impact on the earth. Working with the most advanced imaging technologies and travelling around the world in order to capture sites such as mines and factories, Burtynsky once referred to his stunning, socially committed photographs as “reflecting pools of our times.”
Burtynsky is the recipient of many awards, including induction into the International Photography Hall of Fame. His work is part of public collections such as the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography, Bibliothèque nationale (Paris), and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and corporate collections such as Scotiabank, BMO, Boston Red Sox, and Chase Bank (New York).
