Lot 51

Considering the everyday, through photographs or internet searches, Richard Storms paints the commonplace, the overlooked and underappreciated vignettes out of daily routine. In the work on offer at this year’s Art With Heart, Storms narrowed his focus onto the car culture of his generation. Alfa Romeo Duetto (The Graduate, 1967) is part of a series of paintings of famous getaway cars from American movies from the 1960s to the 1990s. These films romanced and sold not only the American-engineered objects of desire, but also the culture of speed, the dream of escape on the open road, the masculine supremacy of being in the driver’s seat. Here, the artist captures the Alfa Romeo Duetto driven across the Golden Gate Bridge by Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman) in the 1967 film The Graduate directed by Mike Nichols.

Storms completed his MFA from York University with a specialty in Painting. He has exhibited widely in private and public galleries in Canada and internationally, including shows at The Power Plant, Mercer Union, The Art Gallery of Hamilton, Museum London and the Kamloops Art Gallery. Storms work can be found in notable collections such as The Art Gallery of Peel, TD Bank, RBC, BMO collections, The Art Gallery of Hamilton and The Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal.
