At some point while walking in the woods Wiens took a camera along and started photographing mushrooms; the ones he picked and the ones he left behind. The photographs grew into the hundreds, and although the subject seemed small, he realized they were perfect as quick sketches. Nothing about the appearance of mushrooms seems to indicate that they belong in a forest dominated by leafy plants, yet there they are, working their underground magic, their filaments forming a vast unseen network of connection to everything around them.
