New Red Sun is part of Lucas Biagini’s Tillage series, which began in 2019 from his desire to conserve paint, using leftover oil paint on wooden boards in his studio. After drying for a month, the artist would scrape and spread the oil skins onto panels and cut into the surface, resembling tilling a garden. This process revealed diverse colours and textures, which Biagini connected to tilling while working on his dad’s garden in 2020. Scraping and mixing the oil skins hides colours, similar to tilling enabling new growth. Cutting into them transforms discarded paint into vibrant hues, akin to a garden blooming with fresh visual experiences.
