Caroline Ji is an oil painter currently living and working in Toronto. Her current body of work centers around themes of solitude, self-perception, emotional intimacy, and how human beings relate to each other. Memories and thoughts surrounding gender equality and its power dynamics, cultural identity, and observations of people around her all contribute to the narrative in her work.

“Night Painter” is a self-portrait done during a 6-week residency at Pouch Cove Foundation in Newfoundland. With very few humans to interact with and ocean-watching as the primary source of entertainment, this painting is the artist having a conversation with herself about the experience of living alone in a foreign place. It’s a look at how we become emotionally attached through forming habits, and how habits become emotions and memories.
