Artist Statement
As an older Black female multi-disciplinary artist, curator, and writer, Gloria C. Swain has experienced a lot of exclusion in the art world, based on her race, sex, and age. This has made her feel unwanted and unlovable, but art continues to be a creative outlet for identity, self-expression and acceptance. Swain’s art journey is inspirational and inspires hope in everyone who is unique. Geometric abstraction, in her work, illustrates the rhythms of life, with sharp edges that collide and shatter to challenge systemic oppression.
